DIY Ikea Inspired Wall Shelf

Tall & Slim But So Much Added Shelf Space
This week I am going to show you how to make this DIY Ikea Inspired Wall Shelf. Last week I showed how I made my Overstock Inspired Corner Bookcase. If you havenβt seen that post, you can see it here! I decided to make it because I am remodeling my tiny master bedroom, and I needed my furniture to provide maximum storage capabilities in a small space. And not only does my corner bookcase do just that for me, but so does this DIY Ikea Inspired Wall Shelf! It is tall and slim and creates so much shelf/storage space.Β
The Benefits Of DIYβing It
Let me tell you the benefits of building this yourself, over purchasing Ikeas original. 1) You can adapt the dimensions to fit your personal needs. 2) You can paint or stain it whatever color you want (but I opted to keep it white like Ikea) 3) It is made of quality material β real wood, whereas Ikeas is made of fiberboard particleboard & paper filling. 4) It is more cost effective. 5) The feeling of accomplishment you receive from knowing you built it is Indescribable.
Now if all that sounds good to you and if you would like to find out how I made this DIY Ikea Inspired Wall Shelf then please keep reading!
Supplies
- 1x10x12 Quality Pine Board
- Lint Free Rag
- Shellac
- Paint and/or Stain Of Your Choice
- 2 Inch Wood Screws
- Wood Glue
- Β
Tools:
- Circular Saw, Miter Saw or Hand Saw
- Hand Sander or Sandpaper
- Power Drill
- Tape Measure
- Pencil
- Paint Brush
- Corner Clamp
- Speed Square

Prepping And Painting
I started by taking my 1Γ10 board and utilizing my miter saw, I cut it down to 6 pieces. You can also use a circular saw, or hand saw for this step.
1 piece @ 64 ΒΌ inches long
2 pieces @ 6 inches long
3 pieces @ 8 inches long
After I had all my pieces cut, I used my hand sander and gave them a few rounds of sanding. Starting with an 80 grit sandpaper and working my way to 120 grit for the last round. Once that was complete, I wiped all the boards down with a lint free rag. This allows a clean surface for my shellac & paint to adhere to. Β After applying a coat of shellac and once they were completely dry, it was another quick 120 grit sanding and a final wipe down. Last, I applied a couple of coats of white paint to all of the boards, making sure to allow the first coat to dry completely before starting the next.

Marking My Shelves
Once my paint was completely dry, I grabbed my longest piece of wood (the backboard of my shelf) and a tape measure. I then proceeded to make pencil marks at the following lengths along my piece of wood: 8β, 18 Β½β, 29β, 39 Β½β, 48 & 56 Β½β. This is where the bottom of my shelves will line up. These measurements are based on my needs; you can adjust them for yours.

On to the assembly
Now that I had that information, I was able to attach my shelves. I utilized my corner clamp to hold the shelves in place as I made pilot holes for my screws. And I used my speed square to keep the shelves square.
After I made my pilot holes, I placed a bead of glue into the seam where the boards meet and screwed the boards together. Β I repeated these steps for all five shelves and my project was complete. Easy peasy!
