The Inspiration

I recently told you I would be making over my tiny master bedroom. And with it being only 8x12ft, I definitely had to get creative when it came to adding tons of storage to a small space, while still keeping it chΓc and cozy. While researching all the particular items I wanted to include in my new bedroom, I came across a 5-Tiered Corner Bookcase from Overstock. It was perfect for the tight spot I was looking to put it in and it had tons of shelf area. But the price tag did not suite me at all. So what was a girl to do but DIY it! Lets go DIY Corner Bookcase.

Why I Love To DIY My Own

There are many reasons I love to DIY my own furniture when possible. Of course there is the price difference. I don’t mind a little work if it’s gonna save me a few dollars. But I also love the fact that I can change it to fit my dΓ©cor. I can change the measurements to fit it into the space I need it to and/or paint or stain it a different color. Another great thing about making my own furniture is, I use real wood, not that corrugated stuff, so it holds up so much better and lasts way longer. But one of the best parts of making my own, is the feeling of having known I made it, the feeling of accomplishment when it is all complete and looks awesome, that feeling is one of the best feelings in the world.

Back To The Bookcase

As I said one of the things I love about making my own furniture is I can change the measurements to fit it into the space I need it to. And that is exactly what I did with Overstock’s 5 Tiered Corner Bookcase. I kept the height at 67 inches but shortened the shelves just a bit, and placed the shelves according to my likings. I’m gonna show you how I built mine and the dimensions I used, but you can change it to fit your needs, as I did.

Supplies:

  • 1x10x12 Quality Pine Board
  • 1x10x8 Quality Pine Board
  • Lint Free Rag
  • Shellac
  • Paint and/or Stain Of Your Choice
  • 2β€³ Wood Screws
  • Wood Glue

Tools:

  • Miter Saw, Circular Saw or Hand Saw
  • Power Drill
  • Hand Sander or Sand Paper
  • Paint Brush
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Corner Clamp
  • Speed Square

Prepping My Boards

The first thing I did to create my 5 Tiered Corner Bookcase was to cut down my two 1Γ—10 boards. I did this with my miter saw but you could also use a circular saw or hand saw. I took the 1x10x12 board and cut 2 pieces @ 67 inches long out of it. Then I grabbed my 1x10x8 and cut 5 pieces @ 16 inches long and 1 piece @ 10 inches long out of it. Once I had all my boards cut out, I sanded them down and cleaned them with a lint free rag. Pro Tip: You can take old cotton t-shirts and cut them up for shop rags.

Painting And Staining

Next it was time to paint and stain all the boards. The 6 smaller boards I put on a coat of shellac and then once that was completely dry, gave them a quick sanding. The shellac helps to prevent any yellow spots from coming through the wood when ,this usually happens when you use chalk paint or white paint (which I applied next) on the wood. I applied 2 coats of white paint to each of the 6 smaller boards.

Then it was on to my two longer boards. These I applied a Varathan oil based stain in Cherry. I did like the way it came out, but didn’t feel like the rich red fit into my plan for my bedroom remodel. So I decided to experiment and add another stain color on top, MinWax in Classic Grey. And I absolutely love how the combination of the two stains came out! The Classic Grey stain really toned down the red from the Cherry stain and added a β€œwore in” look to the wood.

Making My Mark

Before I could put my 5 Tiered Corner Bookcase together, I had to mark exactly where my shelves would sit. So I took the two stained boards & a tape measure and going from on end all the way to the other, I marked a small line at the following points; 10β€³, 22 1/2β€³, 35β€³, 47 1/2β€³ & 60β€³, on both boards. These marks are where the bottom of each of my shelves would be. Once I had all my points marked on both boards, it was time to start assembling.

Time To Assemble

To assemble this 5 Tiered Corner Bookcase I first had to attach the five 16 inch pieces (these are my shelves) to one of the longer boards (side board).
Working one shelf at a time and making sure to pilot hole all my screw holes to prevent my wood from cracking.

This is how I laid out my boards when assembling.

I grabbed one shelf and placed it at the 10β€³ mark. The bottom of each shelf just barely sat on top of my mark.

Once my board was in place, I used a corner clamp to hold the boards put while I pilot holed my 2 screw holes. Once I had finished making pilot holes, I un-clamped the shelf and put a bead of wood glue along the joint where the sideboard and the shelf meet. Then I screwed the boards together using my 2 inch wood screws. I repeated these steps for the remaining 4 shelves.

Once I was complete attaching all 5 shelves to the side board, I proceeded to attach the back board. I placed my back board right on top of my bookcase and repeated all the same steps I used to attach the shelves to the side board: Line up my shelves, pilot hole, glue & screw.

Attaching the backboard.

The final step in assembling my 5 Tiered Corner Bookcase, was to attach the bottom leg. This was the one 10 inch piece I had left. I attached the leg ? inches from the outer edge of the bottom shelf with two screws going down through the bottom shelf into the leg and two going through the back board and into the leg. I pilot holed all four screw holes, then glued and screwed the boards together. If I would have only done 2 screws at a time, I would have had difficulty getting glue into the second seam.

And that was it. It was all finished. What do you think? I promise its really more simple than it seems. And it is a perfect way to add a decorative touch to any empty corner.
